Investigations of electromechanical equilibrium in ion-exchange membranes

Abstract

Measurements of the hydrodynamical permeability and the osmotic ratio jL/ji are performed on ion-exchange membranes using the electrolytes NaCl, LiCl and HCl. With the exception of HCl the experimentally found values agree with the values calculated according to the theory of electromechanical equilibrium. The anomaly of HCl results from the discrepancy between the true frictional coefficient of the hydrogen ion and its apparent mobility in an electric field.
