Cleavage of vicinal diols by iodine triacetate and iodine(I) acetate

Abstract

Oxidative cleavage of vic-diols is achieved rapidly and in high yield with iodine triacetate or iodine(I) acetate. Acetic acid and a macrocyclic peroxide have been isolated from the reaction of cis-cyclohexane-1,2-diol with iodine(I) acetate in dichloromethane, suggesting that the cleavage occurs by a radical process.
