Addition of anhydrous hydrogen chloride to bis(ethynyl)bis(dimethylphenyl-phosphine)platinum(II). A novel sequence of platinum(II) promoted addition–elimination reactions

Abstract

trans-[Pt(C[triple bond, length half m-dash]CH)2L2](I) reacts with anhydrous HCl (1 equiv.) to give trans-[PtCl(C[triple bond, length half m-dash]CH)L2](V) and acetylene by way of a sequence of reactions involving trans-[Pt(C[triple bond, length half m-dash]CH)(CCl[double bond, length half m-dash]CH2)L2](II), trans-[Pt(CCl[double bond, length half m-dash]CH2)2L2](III), and trans-[PtCl(CCl[double bond, length half m-dash]CH2)L2](IV), where L = PMe2Ph; the reaction sequence demonstrates that platinum(II) promotes both the rapid addition of HCl to a co-ordinated acetylide ligand and the ready eliminatior of HCl from the α-chlorovinyl ligand, Pt-CCl[double bond, length half m-dash]CH2.
