Ring contraction of 1,2,4-benzoxadiazines to benzoxazoles

Abstract

1,2,4-Benzoxadiazines (1) are converted into the corresponding benzoxazoles (2) in good yields by heating in solvents at 80–140 °C; a mechanism involving π4a+π2a cyclisation of an ortho-quinoneimine intermediate is suggested.
