Structure and stability of acylnitroxyls

Abstract

The strengths of the O–H bonds in four p-substituted N-t-butylbenzohydroxamic acids [p-X–C6H4-CON(But)OH] have been estimated experimentally; together with the effect of substituent upon the aN value of the resulting nitroxyls, the values obtained are taken to indicate that these nitroxyls are destabilised with respect to dialkyl nitroxides, and this conclusion finds some support in the results of INDO calculations on related structures.
