Gasometric micro-determination of amino, amide, anilide, oxime, nitro and nitroso groups in organic compounds

Abstract

A simple gasometric micro-method is described for the rapid determination of the amino group in aromatic amines, α-amino-acids and carboxamides. The method is based on a deamination reaction whereby 1 mol of nitrous oxide is liberated per mole of compound. Anilides are first hydrolysed with hydrochloric acid, and nitro and nitroso compounds and oximes are reduced with zinc and hydrochloric acid to the corresponding amino compounds, and are then determined in a similar manner. Results within ±0·2 per cent. absolute of the theoretical group-nitrogen content were obtained for most of the compounds under investigation.
