Chloride and bromide complexes of cadmium and lead in aqueous melts of NH4NO3,xH2O

Abstract

The formation constants of species CdCl+, CdCl2, CdBr+, CdBr2, PbCl+, PbCl2, PbBr+, and PbBr2 in aqueous melts of composition NH4NO3,xH2O (x= 1·5, 2, and 3) are evaluated from e.m.f. measurements of suitable concentration cells in the temperature range 40–70 °C. The results are interpreted in terms of a quasi-lattice model of aqueous melts. Standard enthalpy changes for complex formation are calculated and compared with data obtained in sodium nitrate melts.
