Reaction between finely divided iron(III) oxide and barium carbonate, in vacuo

Abstract

From the carbon dioxide evolved by mixtures of iron(III) oxide and barium carbonate as a measure of the progress of reaction, a study has been made of the kinetics of formation of the compound BaO. Fe2O3in vacuo. The data did not conform with any of the equations commonly used to account for the rates of reactions between solids. The proportionality of the fraction reacted with the log of the time elapsed was noted. The products of the reaction were examined by electron microscopy. Spikes, plates and other forms with large surfaces were noticed in mixtures heated to temperatures from 650 to 850°C. The reaction is complex.
