Reactions of some dicarbonyl compounds. Part II

Abstract

Self-condensation of ethyl oxaloacetate, catalysed by base, affords ethyl 4,5-bisethoxycarbonyl-2,5-dihydro-3-hydroxy-2-oxo-5-furylacetate (Ia), whose structure is confirmed, and ethyl 5-carboxy-4-ethoxycarbonyl-2,5-dihydro-3-hydroxy-2-oxo-5-furylacetate (Va). The latter melts with decomposition giving after methylation, ethyl 4-ethoxycarbonyl-2,5-dihydro-3-methoxy-2-oxo-5-furylacetate (IVe).
