Abstract

The compounds (EtO)2P(O)·CH2·C(O)R (R = Me in diethyl β-ketopropylphosphonate, R = Ph in diethyl phenacylphosphonate) do not form complexes with alkali-metal halides. The sodium salt of (EtO)2P(O)·C·[H with combining macron]C(O)Me reacts with o-nitrophenol, 8-hydroxyquinoline, or isonitrosoacetophenone to give the corresponding sodium salt and free diethyl β-ketopropylphosphonate.

Phenacyldiphenylphosphine oxide, Ph2P(O)·CH2·C(O)Ph, forms (1 : 1) complexes with LiBr and Lil and a (3 : 1) complex with Mg(ClO4)2; in these it is probably chelated. It does not react with salts of larger-radius alkali metals. It forms a (2 : 1) complex with UO2(NO3)2 in which it is unidentate.
