1,1-Dichloronaphthalene-2(1 H)-one (I) gives 1-chloro-4-methoxy-2-naphthol with methanolic sodium methoxide, and reacts analogously with the sodium salt of 2-methoxyethanol. With aqueous sodium hydroxide the course of the reaction is different, 1-chloro-2-naphthol and hypochlorite being formed.
