Infrared studies on α-nitro-ketones. Part I. ω-Nitroacetophenone

Abstract

The i.r. spectra of solid ω-nitroacetophenone, C6H5·CO·CH2·NO2, and its deuterium compounds, C6D5·CO·CH2NO2, C6H5·CO·CD2·NO2, and C6D5·CO·CD2·NO2, have been studied in detail in the region 4000–400 cm.–1. The spectra show that ω-nitroacetophenone is in the α-nitro-ketonic form. A planar or quasi-planar arrangement of the C6H5–CO–C–N grouping is also indicated. Evidence of intramolecular interaction between the hydrogen atoms of the methylene group and the hydrogen atom in the ortho-position in the benzene ring has been found.
