Reactions of low-valent metal complexes with fluorocarbons. Part XIII. (π-Cyclopentadienyl)bis(π-ethylene)rhodium

Abstract

Treatment of [Rh(π-C5H5)(C2H4)2] with perfluoromethyl iodide in benzene at room temperature affords [{Rh(π-C5H5)(CF3)I}2]. In contrast, perfluoropropyl iodide gives a mononuclear rhodium complex [Rh(π-C5H5)(C2H4)-(C3F7)I], which at 50° yields [{Rh(π-C5H5)(C3F7)I}2]. Both binuclear complexes react with pyridine to give [Rh(π-C5H5)(RF)(py)I](RF= CF3 or C3F7). Some related reactions of bis(π-ethylene)rhodium acetylacetonate are described. Reaction between [Rh(π-C5H5)(C2H4)2] and pentafluorobenzenesulphonyl chloride affords [{Rh(π-C5H5)(C6F5)Cl}2], from which the compounds [Rh(π-C5H5)(C6F5)(L)Cl](L = C5H5N, PPh3, and H2N·CH2·CH2·NH2) can be obtained.
