Metal–triketone complexes. Part II. Copper complexes exhibiting antiferromagetism

Abstract

Two series of chelate copper(II) complexes of the three triketones: heptane-2,4,6-trione, 1-phenylhexane-1,3,5-trione, and 1,5-diphenylpentane-1,3,5-trione are reported. The i.r. spectra show that the co-ordination of these ligands occurs via the carbonyl oxygen atoms. For one of these series, i.e.[(CuL)2], the room-temperature magnetic moments of ca. 0·6 B.M. suggests antiferromagnetic behaviour; this is supported by the magnetic behaviour of these complexes over a temperature range which shows them to be one of the strongest antiferromagnetic copper(II) systems yet reported.
