Crystal and molecular structure of (+)495-[L-glutamatobis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III)] perchlorate: the product of a kinetically stereoselective reaction

Abstract

The crystal and molecular structure of (+)495-[L-glutamatobis(ethylenediamine) cobalt(III)] perchlorate has been determined from three-dimensional X-ray diffraction data recorded by photographic methods. The structure has been refined by least-squares analysis of 1039 observed unique data to R 0·073. Crystals are orthorhombic, space group P212121(D24) with a= 13·54, b= 12·08, c= 10·06 Å, and Z= 4. The complex cations are linked via extensive but generally weak hydrogen bonding. The perchlorate groups occur as essentially discrete entities and, as evidenced by their high Debye factors, are partially disordered. The absolute configuration of the complex cation, is deduced to be D from atom co-ordinates and the known L-glutamic acid configuration.
