An electron diffraction investigation of gaseous chlorine dioxide

Abstract

The electron diffraction pattern from gaseous chlorine dioxide at 10°C has been recorded over the range s= 0·86–35·00 Å–1. Least-squares refinement gave the following structural parameters: rg(1) for CIO = 1·475 Å, rg(1) for OO = 2·525 Å, <OCIO = 117·7°, uCIO= 0·035 Å, and uOG= 0·063 Å. The corresponding estimated standard deviations are 0·003 Å, 0·022 Å, 1·7°, 0·004 Å, and 0·024Å, respectively. The vibrational amplitudes obtained are in agreement with values calculated from spectroscopic data.
