Biosynthesis of ergot alkaloids from (5R)- and (5S)-[5-3H1]-mevalonolactones

Abstract

The biological formation of the ergot alkaloids is shown to take place with specific loss of the 5-pro-R hydrogen from the mevalonate precursor.
