Oxidative coupling of phenols. The biosynthesis of pilocereine

Abstract

The biosynthetic conversion, by oxidative phenolic coupling, of [N-methyl-14C]lophocerine into pilocereine has been observed in Lophocereus schottii. The devised pilocereine was labelled solely in the N-methyl groups. L-Methionine provides the N- and O-methyl groups of lophocerine.
