Covalent compounds of quadrivalent transition metals. Part I. Spectra and magnetic properties of vanadium(IV) alkoxides, dialkylamides, and NN-dimethyldithiocarbamate

Abstract

From the electronic absorption spectra, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies, and room-temperature e.s.r. spectra it is concluded that the monomeric d1 compounds V(OBut)4, V(NMe2)4, and V(NEt2)4 have considerably distorted tetrahedral configurations. The data on V(S2CNMe2)4 are consistent with 8-co-ordinated (possibly dodecahedral) vanadium(IV). Vanadium tetraethoxide is dimeric and a structure is suggested with 5-co-ordinated (trigonal bipyramidal) vanadium(IV). Vanadium tetramethoxide, which is trimeric, has magnetic properties consistent with a structure involving highly distorted octahedral vanadium(IV).
