Preparation and properties of NN-dialkyldithiocarbamates of early transition elements

Abstract

Tetrakis-NN-dialkyldithiocarbamato-metals M(S2CNR2)4(R = Me, Et, or Prn and M = TiIV or ZrIV; or R = Me, Et, or M = VIV or NbIV) have been prepared by reactions involving the insertion of CS2 into metal dialkylamides. The pentakis-compound Ta(S2CNMe2)5 and the tin(IV) compound Sn(S2CNEt2)4 were also obtained. Spectroscopic (u.v., visible, i.r., and n.m.r.) studies were carried out together with some magnetic susceptibility, electrical conductance, and X-ray diffraction measurements. The tetrakis-derivatives of Zr and Nb are probably examples of eight-co-ordination by sulphur but the structures of TiIV, VIV, and TaV are open to doubt and require complete X-ray structural analysis.
