Magnetic and Mössbauer studies of a 5T1A equilibrium in some iron(II)–2-(2-pyridyl)imidazole complexes

Abstract

The preparation of 2-(2-pyridyl)imidazole (pyim) complexes of the type [Fe pyim3]X [where X = SO4,2H2O, SO4,3H2O, Cl2,2·5H2O, SeO4,H2O, S2O3,4H2O, (SCN)2,2H2O, (ClO4)2,2H2O, or (BPh4)2,3H2O] is described. The magnetic susceptibilities of these compounds are reported for the temperature range 90–300°K, and Mössbauer spectra have been recorded for the sulphate trihydrate, chloride, and thiocyanate at room temperature, 70°K, and 1·4–4°K. The results are shown to be consistent with the existence of a 5T1A equilibrium.
