Thermodynamic, ultrasonic, spectroscopic and miscibility studies of water + methyl cyanide solutions

Abstract

The ultrasonic absorption, excess volumes and mutual solubilities of mixtures of methyl cyanide and water are reported together with the near infra-red absorption spectra of 6 m HOD in deuterium oxide containing methyl cyanide. These properties of methyl cyanide and water mixtures are compared with those of tertiary butyl alcohol and water mixtures and discussed in terms of the effects of added methyl cyanide on the structure of water.
