N-substituted heterocyclic cations. Part VII. Products of reaction of alcohols with N-cyanoquinolinium fluoroborate

Abstract

The N-cyanoquinolinium ion reacts with pure alcohols to give products which are consistent with the formation of alkyl cyanates as transient intermediates. The major products from the reactions with methanol and ethanol are the corresponding stable crystalline alkyl N-(1-cyano-1,2-dihydroquinolin-2-yl)carbamates. The mechanism of the reactions is discussed.
