Pteridine studies. Part XXXVII. Covalent hydration in 4,6,7-trimethyl- and 2,4,6,7-tetramethyl-pteridine

Abstract

Hydration across the 3,4-bond occurs readily in the cations of 4,6,7-trimethyl- and 2,4,6,7-tetramethyl-pteridine (on the evidence of 1H n.m.r. and u.v. spectra in aqueous acid), in spite of possible steric hindrance by the 4-methyl group. It is shown that the effects of hindering groups are not necessarily additive.
