Reactions of hydroxymethylene ketones. Part III. Synthesis of 1,2-dihydro-2-oxo-pyridine polycarboxylic acids

Abstract

3-Cyano-6-styryl-2-pyridones (IV), prepared by condensation of cinnamoylacetaldehydes (I) with cyanoacetamide, have been degraded to a variety of products including 1,2-dihydro-2-oxopyridine-3-carboxylic acids. Analogously, ethyl 3-cyano-1,2-dihydro-2-oxo-6-styryl-pyridine-4-carboxylates (X) led to another series of 1,2-dihydro-2-oxopyridine carboxylic acids.
