Phototransformations of tropolones. Part VI. New rearrangements in the benztropone series

Abstract

Ultraviolet irradiation of nonaqueous solutions of tetra-O-methylpurpurogallin leads to two new rearrangements. In absolute ethanol the sole isolated product was 1-hydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxynaphthalene, in a variety of aprotic solvents the naphthol was accompanied by a tricyclic ketone of novel structure.
