Five-co-ordinate adducts of aluminium, gallium, indium, silicon, and germanium

Abstract

Vibrational spectra and analytical data are presented for the following compounds: MX3,2NMe3(where MX3= AlCl3, GaCl3, InCl3, InBr3, Inl3) and [M′Cl3,2NMe3]+ ClO4(where M′= Ge, Si). For the Group III trihalides the qualitative order of (thermodynamic) stability appears to be Al > Ga < In, Cl > Br > I. Spectroscopic data are also presented for the supposed compound AlBr3,2NMe3. In all cases (except that of Inl3,2NMe3)D3h symmetry is likely for the 5-co-ordinate neutral species.
