The effects of ion association on the optical rotatory dispersion of tartaric and mandelic acid complexes with molybdenum(VI)

Abstract

The optical rotatory dispersion curves of solutions of D- and L-tartaric and -mandelic acid complexes with molybdenum(VI) are affected by the presence of added cations. In general, other cations cause their optical rotatory dispersion to increase, but in some cases, in particular with chromium(III), the added cation produces an ‘ion-pair’ with sufficient interaction to give a Cotton effect arising from the added cation.
