Ligand reactions. Part II. The addition of hydrogen halides to some unsaturated aliphatic amines co-ordinated to cobalt(III)

Abstract

In aqueous solutions, hydrogen chloride adds to cis-chloro(allylamine)bis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) chloride to give a mixture of 42%cis-chloro-(β-chloro-n-propylamine)bis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) chloride and 58%cis-chloro-(γ-chloro-n-propylamine)bis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) chloride. Hydrogen bromide reacts with the corresponding bromo-complex similarly, giving 38%cis-bromo-(β-bromo-n-propylamine)bis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) bromide and 62%cis-bromo-(γ-bromo-n-propylamine)bis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) bromide. Each mole of the corresponding cis-chloro(propargylamine) complex takes up two moles of hydrogen chloride, but each mole of the bromo-analogue can only take up one mole of hydrogen bromide.
