Reactions of 8-quinolinol with covalent halides. Part II. Tin(IV) and titanium(IV) halides

Abstract

The adducts MX4,2oxH (M = Ti or Sn, X = F, Br, and l) are formed when 8-quinolinol (oxH)(2 mol.) in chloroform or tetrahydrofuran is added to the appropriate tetrahalide; with M = Si or Ge, however, adducts are not formed but there is loss of hydrogen halide and precipitation of the dihalogenodi-8-quinolinolatometal MX2ox2. The 1:2 adducts, either by the action of heat (X = F, Br, and l), or by the addition of excess of 8-quinolinol (X = Br and l) give the corresponding MX2ox2. The dihalogenodi-8-quinolinolatotitanium compounds with excess of 8-quinolinol give TiX ox3 in which titanium is probably heptaco-ordinate for X = F and Br. Iodotri-8-quinolinolatotitanium is a 1:1 electrolyte. The trichloro-8-quinolinolatometals, MCl3ox (M = Ti and Sn), form adducts with 8-quinolinol and with pyridine, and probably contain a pentaco-ordinate metal atom.
