Cross-phenomenological coefficients. Part 9.—Electrophoresis and sedimentation potential in pyrex + acetone and quartz + water systems

Abstract

Electrophoretic velocity and sedimentation potential have been measured for the Pyrex + acetone and quartz + water systems. The cross-phenomenological coefficients L12 and L21 have been evaluated, and Onsager reciprocal relations are satisfied for both systems. The linear phenomenological relation for electrophoresis is valid up to 450 V for the Pyrex + acetone system. The cross-phenomenological coefficients for the former system are smaller than that for quartz + water system showing that the magnitude of zeta-potential in the former case is smaller. The cross-coefficients for Pyrex + water and quartz + water systems are of similar magnitude. The temperature dependence of L12 is given by L12=a+bT, where a and b are constants and T is the temperature in °K.
