Dielectric behaviour of poly(olefine sulphone)s in solution. Part 2.—Dipole moments

Abstract

The mean-square dipole moment per monomeric unit, 〈µ2〉/z, has been determined for various fractions of poly(hexene-1 sulphone) and poly(2-methylpentene-1 sulphone) from dielectric measurements in non-polar solvents. 〈µ2〉/z increases slowly with the degree of polymerization z and is larger the poorer the solvent. The variation with z has been interpreted by assuming that the individual sulphone dipoles are displaced from the bisectors of the CSC main-chain valence angles by about 10°. The results are discussed in relation to the dispersion behaviour.
