The biosynthesis of eburicoic acid from sesquiterpene precursors

Abstract

Farnesol and farnesyl pyrophosphate, both tritiated at C-1, when introduced into a culture of Polyporus sulphureus furnish radioactive eburicoic acid. Cell-free extracts of the mould however, while utilising the pyrophosphate and the monophosphate of farnesol in the biosynthesis, did not under our conditions, incorporate farnesol itself.
