Thiophen derivatives. Part XVI. The Vilsmeier–Haack reaction with 3- and 4-methoxybenzo[b]thiophen

Abstract

The Vilsmeier–Haack formylation of 3-methoxybenzo[b]thiophen at moderate temperature leads to 2-formyl-3-methoxybenzo[b]thiophen, and under more drastic conditions, to 3-chloro-2-formylbenzo[b]thiophen. 4-Methoxybenzo[b]thiophen undergoes formylation in the benzene ring, to give 7-formyl-4-methoxybenzo[b]thiophen.
