Molecular polarisability. The conformations of six molecules containing the cyano-group

Abstract

Dipole moments and molar Kerr constants (× 1012) at 25° are reported for cyanomethyl methyl ether (2·99 D, +111) 1-cyanopropane (3·53 D, +281), 1-cyano-2-methylpropane (3·62 D, +256), 3-cyanopropene (3·48 D, +263), and diphenylcyanomethane (3·57 D, –18) as solutes in carbon tetrachloride, together with the molar Kerr constant of 1,2-dicyanoethane (+21) as a solute in benzene. Conformations of the molecules are investigated. The possibility of solvent-induced conformational changes of 1,2-dicyanoethane is discussed.
