Surface properties of metal oxides. Part I. Infrared studies of the adsorption and oxidation of carbon monoxide on alumina
Abstract
The adsorption of carbon monoxide on alumina has been studied by infrared spectroscopy. Only one absorption band can be assigned to carbon monoxide; all others are assigned to adsorbed carbon dioxide produced mainly by oxidation of carbon monoxide. The formation of carbon dioxide adsorbed on alumina is attributed to the presence of oxidising centres. These can be removed by treatment with hydrogen.
