Studies in ion solvation in non-aqueous solvents and their aqueous mixtures. Part VIII. The solubility product of silver chloride in a 20%(w/w) dioxan–water mixture

Abstract

An e.m.f. method has been used to obtain the thermodynamic solubility product of silver chloride in 20%(w/w) dioxan–water at 25°. The free energy of transfer of silver chloride from water to this mixture is calculated. As in methanol–water, the “acid–base” interaction of the silver ion with the solvent molecules stabilises it in dioxan–water, relative to water, to a greater extent than a d0 cation of comparable size.
