Photolytic fluorine reactions: F2+ N2O at 4°K

Abstract

The low-temperature photolysis of fluorine trapped with nitrous oxide in an argon matrix at 4°K is shown to produce oxygen difluoride (OF2), identified by its infrared spectrum. The nature of the ν1 infrared doublet of matrix-trapped 16OF2 is discussed, and the spectrum of 18OF2 has been used to evaluate approximate force constants. An estimate for the lower limit of the bond energy of OF is obtained.
