Nuclear magnetic resonance study of hydrogen-bonding in 1-dodecanol and other alkanols

Abstract

A relation is given between the frequency of the proton resonance of the hydroxyl group of a hydrogen-bonded alkanol in liquid solution, the molar concentration of hydroxyl group, and the equilibrium constant for hydrogen-bonding assuming linear association. The relation is applied to the authors' results for 1-dodecanol and squalane, and to other authors' results for alkanols in non-methylenic solvents. Values for the thermodynamic parameters of hydrogen-bonding are given, and it is shown that the consistency of the results justifies the model.
