The addition of L-cysteine to unsaturated lactones and related compounds

Abstract

The thiol group of cysteine adds to the double bond of unsaturated lactones and related compounds to give thio amino-acids. In certain cases, cyclisation and dehydration leads to the formation of stable, unsaturated, 8-membered cyclic lactams.
