The product of the reaction between benzylidenemethylamine and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate has been identified as tetramethyl 1,6-dihydro-1-methyl-6-phenylpyridine-2,3,4,5-tetracarboxylate from degradative studies and physical data. Cinnamylideneaniline similarly yields tetramethyl 1,6-dihydro-1-phenyl-6-styrylpyridine-2,3,4,5-tetracarboxylate.
