Maleic anhydride adducts of cyclic polyenes. Epoxidation with trifluoroperacetic acid

Abstract

The endo-adducts of maleic anhydride with cyclopentadiene and cyclohexa-1,3-diene react with trifluoroperacetic acid to afford exo-epoxy-derivatives, whereas the corresponding adducts of cyclohepta-1,3,5-triene, cyclo-octa-1,3,5-triene, and 7,8-dichlorobicyclo[4,2,0]octa-2,4-diene give endo-epoxy-anhydrides which are stable towards water.
