Proton magnetic resonance of 1:1 electrolyte–ammonia systems
Abstract
Upon addition of 1:1 electrolytes to ammonia, the proton magnetic resonance shifts to lower fields with the order potassium < sodium < lithium, and perchlorate < nitrate < chloride < bromide < iodide for several series of salts. Variations in the chemical shifts parallel the strength of ammonia–alkali-metal ion bonds and the degree of ion association. Significant differences of chemical shifts between analogous electrolyte–water and electrolyte–ammonia systems are attributed largely to weaker hydrogen-bonding in ammonia than in water.
