Lithiation mechanism of sulfur surfaces during discharge of Li–S batteries from quantum chemical calculations
In the first lithiation of (001) sulfur surface, lower S8 rings convert to Li2S8. In the second lithiation, however, reaction occurs at upper S8 rings adjacent to an existing Li2S8 or on lower S8 rings at a distance, forming new Li2S8 molecules.
