Catalytic-polarographic determination of vanillylmandelic acid in urine using a continuous de-oxygenation-flow injection system

Abstract

A flow injection system with a polarographic detector was developed for the determination of vanillylmandelic acid in urine. This method provides a very sensitive determination of vanillylmandelic acid in the range 2.5–35 ng cm–3 at a sampling rate of 100 per hour. The relative standard deviation was less than 2.5%. No interference from an equivalent molar amount of homovanillic acid or vanillic acid was observed in normal pulse polarographic detection. The relationship between the results and those obtained by high-performance liquid chromatography based on the measurement of oxidation current and also the continuous de-oxygenation procedure are discussed.
