The conformation of 5-methyl-2-[(2-nitrophenyl)amino]-3-thiophenecarbonitrile, known as ROY for the Red-Orange-Yellow of its crystal polymorphs, is restricted by confinement in guanidinium organosulfonate hydrogen-bonded frameworks.

A zinc-responsive fluorophore based on 5′-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridylthiazole

p-Hydroxylphenylpyridylthiazole (HPPT) produces charge transfer induced fluorescence strongly influenced by metal ions. The Zn–HPPT-complex exhibits a Stokes emission of 137 nm (67 nm shift relative to neutral HPPT) with a quantum yield of 92%.

About this collection

Materials Chemistry Frontiers is delighted to present this themed collection on “Supramolecular Chemistry: Towards Materials Frontiers and Complex Systems” to celebrate Professor Jean-Marie Lehn’s 80th Birthday and in honour of his tremendous contributions to supramolecular chemistry!

Professor Jean-Marie Lehn received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987 for studies on molecular recognition. Over the years, he expanded his research to a new field - supramolecular chemistry and more recently towards adaptive chemistry, and continues to innovate in these fields.

Guest edited by Xiao-Yu Cao (Xiamen University), Andrew Marsh (The University of Warwick) and Jonathan L Sessler (The University of Texas at Austin), this web collection highlights some of the most recent efforts in supramolecular Chemistry by Prof. Lehn’s colleagues and friends.
