Harnessing mechanochemical fluorescence toward autonomous damage-reporting coatings

A polymer coating autonomously reports damage via fluorescence from a force-induced retro-Diels–Alder reaction. The optical signal correlates with impact energy, enabling real-time, equipment-free damage detection, even in pigmented coatings.
