Multi-bandgap colloidal quantum dot mixing for optoelectronic devices

Abstract

Colloidal quantum dots have emerged as important elements for various optoelectronics applications due to their unique properties of bandgap tuning through quantum confinement, solution processibility, complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) compatibility, etc. Most of these reported devices are based on monodispersed quantum dots corresponding to a particular energy bandgap. Recently, mixing quantum dots with different bandgaps has been reported with exciting modification of the optical and electronic properties, which can influence the performance of several optoelectronic devices – namely, solar cells, light emitting diodes, photodetectors, etc. In this perspective, the effects of optical and electronic property modification due to multi-bandgap quantum dot mixing and their effects on different optoelectronic device performance parameters are discussed. The recent advances and shortcomings of these devices are summarized in detail. Furthermore, the possible areas of concern and future research directions are included in the discussion.
