Binding affinities of cucurbit[n]urils with cations

High binding constants of 19 inorganic cations with the cucurbit[n]uril homologues (CBn, n = 5, 6, 7, 8) in water were determined and the far-reaching consequences and interferences of the high affinities (millimolar to micromolar) are discussed.

The trans- and cis conformations of 5,5′-substituted 2,2′-dithiophenes can be stabilized when those are secured with two Cucurbit[8]uril macrocycles (CB[8]) on top of rigid 2,6- and 2,7-substituted naphthalenes, which respectively mimic the trans and cis conformations of the dithiophene.

About this collection

Cucurbiturils are water-soluble organic cavitands with exceptional guest-binding properties. Interest in the synthesis, supramolecular chemistry, and uses of cucurbiturils and related cavitands has exploded since the early 2000s, with applications including sensing, separations, drug delivery, catalysis, molecular recognition, and materials science. Research in these diverse areas underscores the unique characteristics of cucurbiturils that enable aqueous molecular recognition over an unprecedented range of binding affinities.
Following the 6th International Conference on Cucurbiturils (ICCB 2019) at Ohio University, our aim in publishing this special issue, Guest Edited by Adam Urbach (Trinity University), Eric Masson (Ohio University), and Kimoon Kim (POSTECH), is to highlight the latest developments in the chemistry of cucurbiturils and related cavitands.  In particular, we aim to highlight synthetic methods for new host compounds, characterization of guest-binding properties, and supramolecular applications ranging from materials science to chemical biology.
