About this collection

Liquid-based materials offer a way to overcome the limitations of traditional solid materials by exploiting the unique properties of liquids, such as dynamic responsiveness, soft interfaces, and structural flexibility. Recent developments have integrated various liquids—aqueous, organic, ionic, and liquid metals—into solid frameworks, leading to innovations like hydrogels, liquid metal-based materials, and liquid-infused surfaces. These advancements bring significant benefits, including adaptability, anti-fouling, anti-icing, self-healing, and efficient interfacial transport, and are applied in the fields of environmental protection, biomedicine, water treatment, gas separation, sensor technology, and energy conversion and storage, etc.

We welcome submissions on Liquid-based Materials in the form of Research Papers, Communications, Reviews, Comments, and Perspectives on topics including, but not limited to:

  • Advanced gel materials
  • Liquid metals
  • Smart/responsive liquids
  • Liquid-infused surfaces/membranes
  • Micro/nanofluidic devices
  • Soft matter
  • Bioinspired liquid-based materials
  • Particles at liquid interfaces
  • Functional & adaptive surfaces
